What Access to Work is
Access to Work is a DWP grant scheme, separate from benefits, that funds practical support to keep or start a job. Details on gov.uk/access-to-work. In Northern Ireland use the nidirect Access to Work equivalent.
What it funds for ADHD
- ADHD-informed workplace coaching (structured 1-to-1 sessions on prioritisation, task initiation and executive function strategies).
- Task-management, note-taking and reading software (for example: mind-mapping tools, speech-to-text, focus timers).
- Support worker time for administrative structure and prioritisation.
- Noise-cancelling headphones and low-distraction equipment.
- Travel where public transport is not feasible.
Employer obligations first
Under the Equality Act 2010, section 20, employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled workers. Access to Work funds support that goes beyond the reasonable adjustments the employer must fund themselves. Ask for the reasonable adjustments in writing first.
How to apply
- Apply online at gov.uk/access-to-work or by phone.
- You can apply as an employee, self-employed person, or someone starting a role.
- Attach any diagnosis or specialist letters you have. Not required, but speeds triage.
The workplace assessment
An Access to Work adviser or workplace assessor will discuss your role, your ADHD-related difficulties, and what practical support would help. The output is a grant offer to fund specific items. Waits have been long at busy periods; apply as early as possible.
Ask for reasonable adjustments first
Our assessment drafts a formal, Equality Act cited reasonable-adjustments letter for your employer, alongside the Access to Work application.
Frequently asked questions
What is Access to Work?
A DWP grant scheme that funds workplace support and adjustments beyond what the employer is reasonably required to provide under the Equality Act 2010. It is not a benefit and does not affect PIP or Universal Credit.
Does ADHD qualify?
Yes. Access to Work is not condition-specific. Any long-term physical or mental health condition that has a substantial adverse effect on your ability to do your job can qualify.
Do I need a diagnosis?
A confirmed or working diagnosis helps but is not always required. The scheme is impact-based. Self-reported functional difficulty backed by any medical evidence is often enough for triage.
What can it fund for ADHD?
Commonly: ADHD-informed workplace coaching, task-management and note-taking software, noise-cancelling equipment, a support worker for organisation and prioritisation, travel where public transport is not feasible.
How long is the wait?
Waits have been long: assessments have been reported to take several months at busy periods. Apply as early as possible. Check the current position on gov.uk.
