What the rules say
How long do I have to ask for a mandatory reconsideration?
One calendar month from the date printed on the decision letter. A late request can be accepted up to 13 months from that date if you give a good reason for the delay, and acceptance is discretionary.
How long do I have to appeal to the tribunal?
One calendar month from the date on the Mandatory Reconsideration Notice, on form SSCS1. A late appeal can be admitted up to 13 months from that date with a good reason, and after 13 months the appeal route is closed.
Does the clock start when I open the letter?
No. It runs from the date printed on the letter, not the date it arrived or the date you read it. If the letter reached you late, say so and give the date it arrived when you explain the delay.
